THURSDAY, Dec. 28, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Dietary fiber supplements combined with energy restriction (ER) are beneficial for weight loss and metabolic profile, according to a study recently published in Foods.

Zala Jenko Pražnikar, Ph.D., from the University of Primorska in Slovenia, and colleagues examined the additive effects of a combination of ER and four dietary supplements on changes in anthropometric and biochemical parameters in individuals with overweight or obesity. One hundred participants were randomly assigned to one of the dietary fiber supplements containing different dietary fibers or a placebo for eight weeks.

The researchers found that at four and eight weeks after the start of the study, fiber supplements plus ER significantly reduced body weight, body mass index (BMI), fat mass, and visceral fat and improved lipid profiles and inflammation; in the placebo group, significant differences in some parameters were seen only after eight weeks of ER. The most effective fiber supplement for reducing BMI, body weight, and C-reactive protein was a supplement containing glucomannan, inulin, psyllium, and apple fiber.

"Fiber supplementation may be a potential approach to improve weight and metabolic health in obese and overweight individuals, but it should not replace a balanced diet with fiber-rich foods," the authors write.

Two authors disclosed ties to Biostile Ltd, which funded the study.
