Combination promotes recovery and better resolution of inflammatory signs and symptoms due to tissue injury

FRIDAY, May 24, 2024 (HealthDay News) -- The oral combination trypsin:chymotrypsin is promising for promotion of rapid recovery and resolution of inflammation due to tissue injury, according to a study published online Dec. 5, 2017, in Advances in Therapy.

Dilip Shah, M.D., from Nanavati Hospital, and Kushal Mital, M.B.B.S., from Medicare Hospital, both in Mumbai, India, discussed use of the proteolytic enzyme preparation trypsin:chymotrypsin, which has been used to facilitate tissue repair since the 1960s.

The authors note that trypsin:chymotrypsin is widely used to hasten repair of traumatic, surgical, and orthopedic injuries. It shows high bioavailability, and its biological activities as an anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous, fibrinolytic, antioxidant, and anti-infective agent help resolve signs and symptoms of inflammation due to tissue injury. In addition, it has an analgesic effect, reducing the pain associated with healing. Postulated mechanisms of action include targeting the early stage of inflammation, characterized by a steep rise in α1-antitrypsin and α2-macroglobulin, which leads to fibrinolytic shutdown and consequent maintenance of inflammation and edema following acute injury; and assisting with maintenance of α1-antitrypsin for a long duration, countering the activity of proteolytic enzymes and their degradative effects, leading to a reduction in inflammatory milieu as well as faster healing. The trypsin:chymotrypsin combination is efficacious and safe for resolving inflammation and edema and improving healing, and is used in clinical indications such as accidental, surgical, and orthopedic injuries; burn injuries; and sciatica.

"Owing to anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous, fibrinolytic, anti-infective, and analgesic effects, trypsin:chymotrypsin oral combination has emerged as a promising treatment to facilitate healing of traumatic injuries," the authors write.
