CAIRO – January 30, 2025 – In a new step to enhance efforts to combat obesity and diabetes in Egypt, the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) has approved the release of "Mounjaro" injections in the Egyptian market for the treatment of obesity. This comes after an agreement was signed between, EVA Pharma, the leading pharmaceutical manufacturer, and the global company "Eli Lilly," to make the treatment available in the local market, ensuring its availability from a reliable source.  

 

Dr. Iman Hussein Kamel, Acting Dean of the Medical Research Institute at the National Research Center, emphasized the importance of providing "Mounjaro," a subcutaneous injection used to treat obesity and diabetes, through trusted channels. She explained that obesity is not just an appearance issue, but a disease linked to more than 200 chronic conditions. She noted that "Mounjaro" represents a new step toward addressing obesity in Egypt, stressing the need for it to be dispensed from accredited pharmacies under medical supervision.  

 

Dr. Amr Matar, President of the Egyptian Society for Therapeutic Nutrition and Head of the Therapeutic Nutrition Unit at the Kasr Al-Ainy Al-Faransawy Hospital, emphasized that obesity is not just about weight gain but also affects overall quality of life. He added that providing medications locally will benefit Egyptian patients.  

 

Dr. Khalifa Abdullah, Professor of Internal Medicine and Diabetes at the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University, stressed that "Mounjaro" injections must be obtained from a reliable source. He warned against using the treatment without medical consultation, explaining that misuse could lead to side effects.  

 

Dr. Abram Wagih, Egypt Cluster Head at EVA Pharma, affirmed the company's commitment to providing the latest pioneering treatments to serve patients in Egypt and more than 70 countries where the company operates. He emphasized that providing proper healthcare needs is a human right. He also highlighted that, through collaboration with Eli Lilly, the treatment was made available in Egypt before many European countries, making Egypt one of the first 15 countries globally to provide “Mounjaro” to patients.
